Not your typical aquarium, Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay (located in Las Vegas, USA) is a total sensory experience designed to transport visitors to an undersea ocean of fantastic sights, sounds and encounters. Featuring dangerous and unusual aquatic animals and fish from the world's tropical waters, Shark Reef takes visitors on a journey through an ancient temple that has been slowly claimed by the sea and a sunken galleon ship where sharks lurk in the water.
Shark Reef is one of the largest exhibits of its kind in North America. The conservation-minded natural exhibit is masterfully created - only manmade coral is used (since coral is an endangered species) and salt water is made by mixing salt imported from the Red Sea with dechlorinated tap water, which contains trace elements found in natural seawater. In addition, two million gallons of water from Shark Reef are filtered every hour.
Shark Reef is a diverse cross-section of magnificent aquatic creatures, including 100 different species of sharks, exotic fish and sea turtles. Featuring more than 2,000 specimens, Shark Reef holds nearly 1.6 million gallons of seawater in fourteen major exhibits. The largest exhibit is the 1.3 million gallon large shark exhibit -- where visitors enjoy a 360-degree view through an acrylic tunnel.
The reef was developed in consulation with the Vancouver Aquarium, one of the world's most respected marine facilities which is renown for innovation and the best in animal care.
