Turtle House Foundation
The Turtle House Foundation (THF) was formed by Osha Gray Davidson, an award-winning journalist and author of Fire in the Turtle House: The Green Sea Turtle and the Fate of the Ocean, by Osha Gray Davidson, published by PublicAffairs Press.
Osha tells a scientific detective story about a mysterious, deadly infection that is killing off one of the ocean's most beloved and ancient creatures, the green sea turtle. The book follows the search for the cause of the tumors afflicting marine turtles world-wide, and describes the surprisingly broad implications the disease has for the oceans and ultimately, all of humankind.
"Fire in the Turtle House is a compelling story about turtles and their future that ought to change our view of the world. Reading this book is an education in illness infecting the ocean but reads like an adventure story. Whether the larger story -- the survival of life on this planet -- has a happy ending or not seems to be in question and certainly may be up to us." -- Jean-Michel Cousteau, President, Ocean Futures Society

About the Foundation
The Turtle House Foundation's motto, Malama Na Honu, is also its purpose: "Protect the Sea Turtle" written in Hawaiian. Traditional Hawaiians consider green sea turtles, or honu, to be sacred animals.
Sea turtles are some of the most extraordinary creatures in the ocean. They are certainly among the most ancient. They've been around for over 100 million years -- since the time of the dinosaurs. But now a global epidemic threatens their existence. Some biologists consider the plague of fibropapillomatosis (or "FP") the most serious epidemic raging in the natural world.
A variety of human activities is likely responsible for turning the once-rare disease found in a single species, into a pandemic that's been reported in all seven species of marine turtles. Global warming, habitat destruction and the addition of nutrients and sediment into coastal waters are all likely factors in the FP epidemic.
The THF provides financial and material support to the efforst of the Caribbean Conservation Corporation/Sea Turtle Survival League to help ensure the survival of the green sea turtle.
The THF depends on private donations from turtle lovers. In addition, a share of the profits from the book: Fire in the Turtle House: The Green Sea Turtle and the Fate of the Ocean (PublicAffairs) goes to the Foundation. Written by THF founder Osha Gray Davidson, the book tells the story of FP and the scientists who are battling it.
